Ptarmigan Sports was formed in July 1998 by two local outdoor enthusiast Steve Lincks and John Greene. With a combined 25 years of experience, Steve and John both recognized the need for an outdoor store in the rapidly growing town of Edwards, Colorado that offered a mix of high quality outdoor products and a level of customer service that would be unmatched. The two adventurers concluded that with their outdoor lifestyle and retail experiences they could offer products and services that would satisfy anyone from the “hardcore” enthusiast to the weekend adventurer. In July of 1998, Ptarmigan Sports opened their 1,850 square foot store with John and Steve as the sole employees. Now, the store size is roughly 3,000 square feet with summer expansion plans to total 4,200 square feet. Ptarmigan employs 7 full time and 10 part time employees. After 3 years of long hours and loads of hard work, John has moved on to other professional challenges and Steve Lincks remains as sole owner and president of Ptarmigan Sports. Our friendly staff is always here to assist you with product questions or to recommend day hikes, overnight backpacking trips, and a variety of local activities in and around the Vail Valley. - Local schools, charities and environmental groups are often the recipients of donations and support from Ptarmigan Sports - Awarded 2003 “Best Outfitter of The Year” by Vail Valley newspaper The Vail Daily - Employees are all the “Outdoor type” and use all the same equipment sold in the store.
